What Type of Identification do You (and Witnesses) Need to Provide?

I may identify a signer or credible identifying witness using one of these methods:

  • I have personal knowledge of the signer's identity.

  • An oath from a credible identifying witness who is personally known to me and the signer.

  • Reliable identification document(s)

  • For remote online notarizing, KBA or knowledge-based authentication which is answering questions the signer should know the answers to


Reliable identification documents are:

  • ones containing a photograph

  • a physical description

  • an identification number

  • and a signature.


If I don't personally know you, you and witness(es), must have at least one of these.  You may be asked for more than one. The identification document must be: 1) current or if expired, issued within the past five years, and 2) bear a serial or other identifying number (FS 117.05[5][b][2])

  • Driver license

  • Official non-driver ID

  • Properly stamped U.S. or foreign passport

  • U.S. Military and Department of Defense ID Cards

  • Non-immigrant Visa or "green card" issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
